Caring for your Cut Tree

Whether you trekked out into the fields and cut your own tree or you chose one of the beautiful pre-cut trees from the racks, there are a few things you should know about how to properly care for your tree to help it stay as soft as possible through the entire Christmas season.

Give your tree a fresh cut

Once you get your tree home, give the trunk a fresh cut. This is especially important if you’ve selected a pre-cut tree. A quarter of an inch (1/4”) is enough, we just need to get to fresh, soft sap.

Place your Tree in Water

Once you’ve given your tree a fresh cut, place it directly into a bucket of water. When it’s ready it will start to drink.

Monitor the water level

Make sure to monitor the water level in your bucket—if the water level drops below the bottom of the trunk and the trunk dries out, your tree may stop drinking water.

Keep away from heat

Do your best to place your tree in an area where it is not in direct exposure to high heat, such as wood stoves or heat vents. These heat sources will cause your tree to dry out quicker. This can also happen if you’ve placed an excessive amount of lights on your tree and leave them on for extended periods of time. Each of these scenarios will cause your tree to dry out faster and create a high fire risk.
